Wishaw Press

30th December 2015

In May I was elected to represent the people of Motherwell and Wishaw and since then I have worked hard to represent you all at Westminster. I have fought against Tory policies such as Welfare and Tax Credit cuts and bombing Syria.  I have questioned the Prime Minister and other government ministers on your behalf.  I have held meetings with the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Business Minister to press the UK Government to take action to help the steel industry.  However the UK Government failed to heed warnings by the steel industry and had taken “little action” to address high energy prices and dumping of Chinese steel in the UK. This is in stark contrast to the reaction of the Scottish Government.

I am proud to be a member of the Scottish Steel Task Force set up by the Scottish Government to find a buyer for our iconic steelworks. We will continue to work tirelessly with unions and steel officials to save jobs and to pressure the UK Government to form a long-term strategy for steel.

In my maiden speech I highlighted that I want to be a local voice and to promote all that is good about here.   I am very proud of the many local people who work tirelessly for their local communities and beyond.

I met with Les Hoey of the Dream Maker Foundation who does so much for seriously ill children and their families at their annual Christmas Party. I  have thanked many local volunteers who do such good work at the Citizens Advice Bureau.  I have just returned from the magnificent Big Toy Giveaway at the Loyola Centre run by committed volunteers.

At my “official” Constituency Office opening we had a marketplace for local organisations such as CAB, SAMH, Sacro, Lanarkshire Links, Welfare Rights, NL Baby Bank and Police Scotland. It was real privilege to host such a useful networking event and to acknowledge the good work they all do.    These are just a few examples of local people determined to make life better for those around them.  Wishaw to Calais and Project 25 are also on my thank you list and I am going to apologise in advance to anyone I have missed!

I want to end this year by wishing all of you a very Happy New Year and I look forward to meeting many more of you in 2016.
